Chlor-Alkali Process
Electrolysis of brine (sodium chloride solution) producing
chlorine gas, hydrogen gas, and sodium hydroxide.
2NaCl(aq) + 2H₂O(l) → 2NaOH(aq) + Cl₂(g) + H₂(g)
Products:
Sodium Hydroxide (NaOH) - Formed near cathode
Chlorine Gas (Cl₂) - Evolves at anode
Hydrogen Gas (H₂) - Evolves at cathode
