Experiment Information

Process: Water (H₂O) is decomposed into hydrogen (H₂) and oxygen (O₂) gases using electrical energy.

Chemical Equation: 2H₂O → 2H₂ + O₂

Expected Results:

  • Hydrogen gas (H₂) forms at the cathode (negative electrode) - 2 volumes
  • Oxygen gas (O₂) forms at the anode (positive electrode) - 1 volume
  • Hydrogen burns with a 'pop' sound when tested with a flame
  • Oxygen supports combustion and makes a flame burn brighter
